Listen 6 - Job 24"x36", Acrylic on Canvas

I wrapped up the 6th portrait in the Listen series over the last couple of days. The model and narrative were inspired by the biblical story of Job and his trials through faith. This has been on the easel off and on for the last three months and it's going to be a bit odd not working on him. I love how it turned out and I'm really happy with how the series is progressing.

The smaller prints are printed on 11"x17" (image area 8.25"x12.25") high quality 100 lbs. archival paper and will be hand signed. There are $33 CAN and include SAH.

Some Listen 6 progress - breaks are good sometimes

A bit of progress on Listen 6. I have not been able to really even look at it the last month between commissions, life stuff , etc.. Nice thing about some time away is errors become very obvious. In the previous version I had a worn poster in the background marking Job's loses in the contest between god and satan. I looked at it today and it was just WRONG. I ended up moving the numbers into the hebrew design arm tattoo and brought some of the black stain elements to the right for balance and it kind of symbolizes Job's torment that must be carried. MUCH happier with it... sometimes a break is good. smile emoticon

Listen 4 and 5 on Display - Art Store of Waterloo Gallery

For the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Lovers I will be displaying Listen 4 and 5 paintings at the public gallery owned by the Art Store in Waterloo for the month of October. It's an wonderful space to display and the owners have always been amazing as a regular customer (in business since 1987). On display are over a dozen local artists' work and you can't compare seeing a piece in person to on a screen. The address is 91 Caroline St. S. Waterloo (parking behind Waterloo Town Square, most of the road cons. is done) and the hours are 10-7 Mon-Sat., noon-5 on Sunday. Listen 6 work in progress - Preparatory drawing

Just wrapping up the canvas sketch-up on the next painting in the Listen series. It's inspired by the Book of Job. It's gonna be a big boy - 2'x3' and a long hauler - about 6 weeks, 200+hours of work. The long term plan with the series in to produce 10-15 paintings and 10 drawings and put together a public showing - gallery or otherwise along with a hardcover book down the line. This is turning into a real labour of love and I'm grateful that I can work on pieces like this. Finished up Listen 5 today. I really love it, had to challenge myself and it was a little victory which was needed. Large parts of the last couple of months have been very frustrating and discouraging and it's easy to embrace and fester in that mindset. I'm very blessed to be surrounded by amazing people and have a spouse who loves and supports me unconditionally. Listen 5 Sketch - In

Working out the canvas sketch-in for Listen 5. One of the things I am happiest about (and scared of) with the Listen series is the opportunity to paint people of different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages that I may not get to locally or through commissions. It's a wonderful chance to grow as an artist and a bit intimidating. The support has been tremendous since I started the series again - thanks so much. Country Western - Cow Girl Traditional Pinup Girl Commission

Here is a recently finished #pinup commission. I took a different approach with this one and tried the Drew Struzan method - heavy underdrawing, base airbrushing, heavy pencil crayon rendering and retouching with acrylic and the air brush. For the first time trying it I'm really happy with the results - it's a nice balance between my drawing and painting both in time and budget.
I get a lot of commission work for pinups which I always find interesting (I don't do much of it in my spare time or pursue it heavily) but it's always fun and challenging finding the right balance in it. The original is available and the client is allowing my to do a limited number of prints, drop me a line if interested.

Finally finished and couldn't be happier. It was an interesting journey on this painting. It was revisiting the first Listen painting and seeing how far I've come the last 4 years and what still needs work. I was focused on the skin quality and capturing the translucent nature of it.

Listen 4 Progress

A few more days progress on Listen 4 (3 on the background, 3 on the face) pretty happy so far. I didn't want to go with "pretty" on this one. I wanted the subject to be fairly ambiguous in her expression so the viewer can fill in the emotional narrative. I'm really focusing on the skin quality and having it feel a little open ended. Not the best photo, it's not this de-saturated but the overall feel is pretty close.

Just got the next painting in the Listen series worked out to the canvas. I'm revisiting the framework of the first one - it's a bit bigger and hopefully I can bring a bit more maturity and experience to it from both a technique standpoint and a few other areas. I've gotten constant requests for a colour version of the original and I'm hoping to take it much further. There will be prints available and I will post as much as I can as the process develops.

Finally done! About 150 hours, a lot of sweating, cursing and love over the last 7 weeks. I'm very happy with how the piece turned out and it's a good start to a new collection of figurative paintings based on this theme. I think it's another step up in technique and getting in the direction I want to go.
